Insurance Defense Litigation
Stephen V. Hammond has been representing insurance companies in civil matters since 1986. Among the companies he has represented are St. Paul Insurance Company, Alfa Insurance Company, Penn National Insurance Company, Hanover Insurance Company, Zurich Insurance Company, Farm Bureau of North Carolina, Catholic Health Initiatives and TIG Insurance Company, among others. He has handled cases for these companies and their insureds in most Alabama Counties from Jefferson County (Birmingham) north to the Tennessee line. Being centrally located in Decatur, Alabama, the north center of the State along Interstate 65, our firm is ideally located to cover counties from the Mississippi line to the Georgia line in north Alabama.
Mr. Hammond has handled many types of cases for these companies, including medical malpractice, defective construction, automobile liability, truck accidents, wrongful death, industrial accidents, fraud, sexual harassment in the workplace, retaliatory discharge, slip and fall, among many others. Although he has litigated many of these cases, he has successfully settled the vast majority of them, saving his clients money, time and worry. He is a member of the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association and the Defense Research Institute. For over 20 years, he has been rated AV Preeminent by Martindale Hubbell. Mr. Hammond was counsel of record in the seminal case of St. Paul Ins. Co. v. Cromeans, 771 F. Supp. 349 (N.D. Ala. 1991), holding for the first time in Alabama that sexual misconduct by a physician is not covered by a medical malpractice insurance policy.
Both Erick Pratt and Laura Terry Powell have helped Mr. Hammond prepare these cases and do the necessary research and legal drafting for pertinent motions prior to trial. Reaching a result that is both just and economical is the goal sought by our firm for every case we handle.
